Financial Post - Windows 7 arrives at crucial time for Microsoft

(20-Oct-09) When Microsoft Corp. took the wraps off Windows 95, the software titan secured the rights to the Rolling Stones' trademark anthem Start Me Up to use in commercials designed to introduce the globe to the latest version of its flagship operating system.

At the time, the rock star approach was befitting the most anticipated software launch in history. People camped outside computer stores, anxious to be among the first to get their hands on a copy of the software the way video game enthusiasts now queue up for the latest release of Halo or Grand Theft Auto.

Thursday, the latest iteration of Windows, Windows 7, goes on sale to the public. But don't expect consumers to be lining up outside electronics stores for this version.
