The technical resources in some enterprise network environments are already overworked as they struggle to keep up with changing network designs and new technology implementations. As a result, there is little time left to consider the full impact of new technologies on existing network support infrastructures. This research note discusses the role of subject matter experts (SMEs) and why this position should be added to the network infrastructure team. The following items are discussed:

  • The SME's primary role and key responsibilities.
  • How an SME fits into network infrastructure organizations.
  • Job qualifications – technical, managerial, and professional.

SMEs must provide both strategic and tactical technology direction to the IT organization. Those SMEs that can accomplish these tasks successfully exhibit high enterprise value.
