The market for IT professionals with in-demand skills is highly competitive. Unfortunately, which skills are in demand changes rapidly. To successfully maintain an appropriate level of talent, IT leaders have to weigh the tradeoffs between developing skills internally and acquiring those skills in the open market.

Two Schools of Thought

How an IT leader decides to get the skills they need depends on budget and time. There are two avenues to choose from:

  • Buy. For the right price, the skills are there for the taking.
  • Build. Work with what's available in-house and grow the desired skills.
