WAN Optimization Vendor Overview: Riverbed Technology

Author(s): Mark Tauschek

One of the pioneers of current WAN optimization technology, Riverbed has seen healthy demand growth for its products since 2004. The Steelhead product was one of the first to combine compression and protocol optimization with byte-level caching. The combination of acceleration and Wide Area File Services (WAFS) has been a hit, and Riverbed does it very well. Riverbed has not rested on its laurels, and continues to evolve and maintain a leading position in an increasingly competitive market.

Vendor and Product Overview

Founded in 2002, Riverbed started shipping product in May, 2004. Early Steelhead appliances with RiOS (Riverbed Operating System) performed well and were embraced by a market demanding WAN optimization. In September, 2006 the company issued a very successful IPO and the capital it raised allowed Riverbed to invest in product development and marketing.
