Medical simulations have existed for decades, but until recently they have been confined to expensive training rooms and niche software applications. Now that multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) are increasingly complex and full-featured, institutions are looking to online virtual worlds for their simulation needs.

If administrators and instructors decide to integrate virtual world simulations into the curriculum or training program, IT will usually not be in a position to refuse. Instead, IT should gain an understanding of the benefits and risks associated with virtual training to make the most of the initiative.
