Virtualization has definite potential for enterprise green initiatives in that it enables literally doing more with less – more server instances running on fewer physical hosts. But beyond consolidation, the flexibility of virtual infrastructures can also optimize power usage among those remaining physical servers.
Virtual Iron, a virtualization vendor that competes with the likes of VMware, Microsoft, and Citrix Systems, is adding a feature called LivePower to its Virtual Iron Version 4.4 product. LivePower enables power savings by moving virtual machines (VMs) to fewer servers and powering down those servers not being used.
