Listed open source as a replacement strategy but did not name open source product names
Did not name pruning the custom applications that the organization may have written over time as a cost reduction strategy
Is there any research to support the notion that open source software is ready for prime time in the enterprise? Perhaps a comparison of support costs for open source vs traditional software.
Yes, there is research to that effect. Here’s a sampling of searchable Info-Tech titles: "Open Source for Enterprise Applications"; "Getting Prepped for Open Source Apps"; "Readiness Assessment for Open Source Enterprise Applications"; "Appropriateness Assessment for Open Source Enterprise Apps"; and "Enterprise-Grade Network Management...For Free!"
I woud have liked to see the names of some of the BI open source products. I'd sure like to check them out to see if they would, in fact, work effectively.
The top three open source BI vendors of note (in no particular order) are: Pentaho, Panorama, and JasperSoft. The thing to remember when considering open source is that it may be cheaper upfront, in terms of licensing, but can have a higher TCO in the long run (i.e. due to maintenance and support etc.).
