Assessment is a critical step between planning and execution of a virtual server implementation. The goal of the technology assessment is to inventory current infrastructure, identify virtualization candidates, and establish the baseline measures for capacity planning.

Technical assessment has three phases:

  • Inventory Current Sever/Storage Infrastructure.
  • Measure Resource Utilization over Time.
  • Compile Results for Analysis.

This research note discusses the analysis of appropriate candidates from a technical point of view – i.e. determining if a server can run on a virtual machine within acceptable limits. Whether a candidate should be virtualized will also depend on combining these findings with the results gleaned in the associated ITA Premium research note, “Business and Operational Assessment for Virtual Server Implementation.”
