Specialty departments within a healthcare organization are managing their operating costs as separate business units while being forced to use a generic electronic medical record (EMR) solution that does not meet requirements. Individual practices must sometimes be evaluated for their own specialty EMR.
One Size Does Not Fit All
Many hospitals, as well as smaller clinics, tend to specialize in particular medical practices. These practices, or specialties, differ from one another greatly in terms of workflow. For example:
- Oncology practices bill differently because of the high number of drug dispensations involved with treatment.
- Obstetrics/gynecology has specific monitoring requirements for fetal surveillance and antepartum/postpartum care.
- Gastroenterology departments must have timely anatomic pathology results in order to make preparations for surgery.
