When Info-Tech published a research note urging enterprises to ban the use of Skype, there was spirited debate surrounding the research note. But the facts were indisputable, and Skype admitted that the popular peer-to-peer application was not intended for enterprise use. A Skype executive also noted that there were no immediate plans to develop an enterprise version of the software.

Fast Forward

It didn't take long for Skype to rethink its position in the enterprise market. By September 2006, a beta product for corporate use was announced, and made generally available as Skype for Business in January 2007. Among other things, the updated software provides a Microsoft Installer (MSI) package that allows IT departments to push Skype to users and control which components of the application are enabled.
