As discussed in the McLean Report research note, “School Districts Must Act Swiftly on SIF,” there are several benefits to adopting the Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF). However, while K-12 school districts today have strong reasons for adopting SIF, the wide scope of implementation can make the project appear daunting. School IT leaders challenged with a SIF mandate need to develop a better understanding of the SIF architecture and components.

SIF Explained

SIF, developed by the non-profit Schools Interoperability Framework Association (SIFA), essentially aims to standardize data objects and information sharing rules for applications used in K-12 environments. Based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) principles and built on XML open standards, SIF addresses widespread issues that school districts experience when trying to share data between separate applications.
