When trying to improve your company’s security, the first step is to make sure you are up to date on the newest threats and understand the types of attacks. For instance, Jessica Ireland, research analyst at Info-Tech Research Group, says that some insider threats are “not necessarily always a case of a disgruntled employee seeking revenge,” but rather a result of human error, such as forgetting to encrypt a document or “writing important passwords on Post-It notes.”

Mobile devices are big targets for attackers because employees want to bring in their own devices or access sensitive company information while away from the office. “These devices are essentially the threats, even if they’re not used for malicious purposes,” Ireland says. “If an organization does not have an appropriate use policy and tools like remote wipe in place, nor do they know what to do around data, that’s when they open themselves up to threats.”
