In April 2008, Microsoft released the latest version of its Microsoft Operating Framework (MOF). MOF is a free resource for Microsoft-based IT shops looking for guidance in implementing industry standard best practices in accordance with ITIL V3. Those enterprises referring to MOF 3.0 should upgrade to the newer release if their intention is to comply with ITIL V3 standards.

Why We Like MOF

MOF is more specific about how to carry out best practices than ITIL. While ITIL is designed to provide good or best practices for IT service management, MOF actually describes how to carry these out in a Microsoft IT shop.
