Business needs dictate mission-critical applications and the need for high availability – IT must plan and deploy technologies to deliver on those requirements.

  • Enterprises beginning planning for high availability need to start from the top down. Start with the business requirements and then move to software, servers, networking, Internet connectivity, and facilities.
  • High availability requirements will vary by enterprise, and potentially for each application. Mission critical means an application is operational when it is needed, not necessarily 24/7.
  • Without a clear definition of the requirements for mission-critical applications, IT staff may find themselves chasing unreachable goals. Work with business managers to define which applications are mission critical and exactly when they must be operational.
