When devising a mobile strategy, multiple factors have to be considered, including but not limited to:

  • Is there a demand for mobile products?
  • Will mobile devices and applications align with the business strategy?
  • If mobile applications are added, will the existing infrastructure (network, security, servers, etc.) require upgrades?
  • Can existing vendors/suppliers support the mobile strategy?
  • What support issues will mobility place on the IT department?

Certain departments, such as sales, have greater demand for a mobile strategy than others. Consider the individuals, often called knowledge workers, who use the Internet, e-mail, and telephone to source, manage, and share information. IT departments must understand how these employees access and manipulate information in order to be effective partners.
