The IT department’s most experienced systems administrator just gave his notice. The organization has managed to find some warm bodies to fill increasing vacancies, but budget limitations and a short supply of experienced workers have depleted the team of veteran IT practitioners. Many IT leaders, IT professionals themselves, approach this situation by taking off their manager’s hat, rolling up their sleeves, and getting to the task at hand – working well into the night fixing mistakes and overseeing multiple projects.

Retention Strategy

For IT organizations that have not yet encountered this scenario, it may be simply a matter of time. The IT industry is facing two impeding conditions: continued growth in IT demand, and a rapid decline of talented IT professionals. In fact, in a study by Deloitte Consulting nearly 20% of over 120 HR executives polled said they feared a significant shortage of IT professionals over the next five years.
