PACS Outsourcing Not for the Faint of Heart

Buying a Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) is a key acquisition for any hospital whose goal is to become an all-digital enterprise. Early in the process, the decision must be made whether or not to outsource PACS operation. Carefully weigh criteria for hosted PACS to avoid costly mistakes.

How Outsourced PACS Works

Application Service Provider (ASP) PACS is an outsourcing option whereby applications and images are delivered and accessed via a browser. File servers are located at the provider's facility and usage is on a fee-for-service basis. The ASP is also responsible for transferring image files to long-term archiving on tape or optical media. The ASP PACS solution is usually provided on a per-study cost basis.
