Spending on Green IT: Who, What, and Why

McLean Report: Research Note

Published: July 17, 2007

Obtaining funds for green IT projects can be a challenge, especially in cases where power consumption is not tracked for IT. Currently, only 16% of enterprises have allocated budget money for green IT projects. However, Info-Tech expects this figure to increase as the payback on green investments is proven among early adopters, and concern for energy consumption and environmental responsibility grows.

Key Findings and Analysis

Currently, budgeting for green initiatives and adoption of green best practices is being led primarily by innovative and leading-edge enterprises. This suggests an adoption curve that is still in its infancy. However, there is significant opportunity for growth in the green market.

Info-Tech has identified a large gap between interest in green IT and implementation of environmentally sound best practices. Specifically, 25% of IT leaders are “very” or “extremely” concerned about energy efficiency and environmental responsibility, but fewer than 10% have actually achieved a “very” or “extremely” green state with respect to their IT operations.
