The Trouble with SharePoint: Native Backup and Recovery

SharePoint has become a very popular enterprise tool for managing important corporate information. Microsoft has incorporated some backup and recovery functionality to protect the SharePoint environment. Understand how far these functions extend and when it’s time to move outside for more robust protection.

Native Backup and Recovery Tools

SharePoint 2001 and 2003 provided minimal backup and recovery functionality. Some improvements were made in the 2007 releases of both WSS (Windows SharePoint Services) and MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server). Microsoft has positioned three different features as potential backup and recovery tools within SharePoint:
