Being solely focused on backup and recovery has given CommVault significant advantages in the market, especially in their recovery granularity. For example, CommVault’s support of Microsoft SharePoint is ahead of the curve. Galaxy is able to restore an individual file or file version from a specific point in time from SharePoint. Because databases have to be backed up as a single unit, many solutions don’t offer the level of granularity to restore a single file without restoring the entire database. Given the popularity of SharePoint in the enterprise, this is a major differentiator for Galaxy.
The History of CommVault
CommVault started in 1988 as the development team within AT&T’s Bell Labs which developed AT&T’s backup and recovery solution. In 1996, they were spun off as Lucent Technologies. Shortly after this spin off, the backup solution separated and privatized as CommVault. The company started offering its backup and recovery suite in 2000 and went public in 2006. They have experienced three years of steady growth, from $82.6 million in revenues for FY 2005 to $151.1 million in FY 2007.
