Use EPEAT to Decrease Equipment Costs and Help the Environment

Info-Tech Advisor: Research Note

Published: February 05, 2008

This is one of two notes on EPEAT. IT departments stand to gain a host of benefits at minimal cost, so take advantage of the rating criteria that are most relevant. Then, read the Info-Tech Advisor research note, “Understand How EPEAT Rates Green IT Equipment,” to learn more about the how products are rated and how products qualify.

How EPEAT Affects IT

The EPEAT evaluates equipment on 51 required and optional criteria. Silver and Gold-rated models meet progressively more optional criteria than Bronze rated models (which must, of course, meet the 23 required criteria).

The EPEAT standard is particularly beneficial to IT when products with Gold or Silver ratings are chosen, as many of the optional criteria contribute to a lower total cost of ownership. However, even Bronze models offer reduced environmental impact and some opportunities for cost savings.
