IP Surveillance: Prepare for New Demands on Network Operations

Info-Tech Advisor: Research Note

Published: January 08, 2008

More organizations today with a need to replace aging legacy CCTV systems are investing in IP-based surveillance solutions – consisting of network cameras and centralized monitoring software – for improved scalability and management. However, this shift towards network-based physical security monitoring has significant implications for IT and network services. Given the critical role that network personnel will play in deployment and operation, involving these staff in early planning is essential.

Why IP Surveillance?

For new security installations, IP-based surveillance offers substantially improved flexibility and management over legacy CCTV systems, which typically consist of analog cameras and digital video recorders (DVRs). With rapidly evolving software-based analytical capabilities and decreasing hardware costs, the need for a long-term enterprise surveillance strategy based on IP is becoming obvious.
