Guard Money and Mother Nature with Green Storage

Info-Tech Advisor: Research Note

Published: October 02, 2007

A year ago the term “green storage” meant the place in the refrigerator where the vegetables were kept. In 2007 “green” is in for the data center and the storage vendors are pushing their green agendas. Find out what all the fuss is about and learn how green storage – in the form of better capacity utilization – can save money as well as the environment.

A Summer of Green Storage

Green is a major buzzword for data center management in 2007 and storage is getting its share of the green marketing. Technologies which a year ago would have been touted for more efficient disk utilization have now been re-christened green storage initiatives by vendors anxious to connect with the green trend.

In June, for example, HP said that improvements to their EVA and XP storage arrays would lead to a 50% reduction in power and cooling costs. The green theme was also big in EMC’s summer product announcements. These included a 33% energy efficiency improvement to their Clariion arrays and 67% less energy being used by the Centera Content Addressable Storage (CAS) archiving platform.
