Info-Tech research suggests that 85% of sub-$5000 server purchases will run a Windows server operating environment. Of these 85% a significant portion are in the market for a workgroup server software solution. Enterprises considering Windows workgroup software should seize the present opportunity to align software and hardware refresh cycles.

Windows SBS 2003 R2 includes everything but the proverbial kitchen sink. Retailing at $599, the Standard Edition includes Windows Server 2003 R2, Internet Information Services (IIS), Exchange Server 2003 SP2, Shared Fax Service, and SharePoint Services. The $1,299 Premium Edition adds SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition, Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004, and FrontPage 2003 to the bundle.

Both editions support up to a maximum of 75 Client Access Licenses (CALs) and allow the Exchange Server and SQL Server components to be installed on additional servers to improve functionality. SBS is a steal compared to standalone costs of $999 for Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition...
