Is a Workgroup Server for You?

Small businesses and many corporate branch offices need to provide basic server functions. Workgroup servers (low-cost server hardware running a workgroup server software suite) offer file/print and e-mail sharing along with remote access and Web hosting. A workgroup server can also benefit enterprises looking to establish autonomous workgroups, consolidate multiple server functions, or equip independent subsidiaries for a minimal investment.

Benefits of the Workgroup Server

Autonomous workgroups and independent subsidiaries may not have access to larger IT resources, but still need workgroup functions in a cost-effective package. Branch-offices and small enterprises may need to consolidate services from multiple appliances into one server.

In either case, shops adding a dedicated workgroup server to their existing peer-to-peer network have one priority: set and forget. This workgroup server must not present significant downtime, introduce process disruption, or require extensive ongoing...
