It is well known that applying patches in a timely manner is essential. Patching keeps systems running efficiently and limits the security threats they face. Windows Software Update Services (WSUS) is a free solution to keep Microsoft environments up to date. However, getting the most out of WSUS requires careful planning.

Healthy Patching Processes

Before evaluating different WSUS deployments, first examine patching best practices. These break the process down into four interlinked phases:

  1. Assess the enterprise infrastructure to determine the most appropriate patch deployment process so as to minimize the impacts of patching.
  2. Identify which patches the enterprise requires and which devices within the enterprise require those updates.
  3. Plan the deployment process to be followed to minimize impact and include testing of patches for negative effects to the production environment.
