Apache 2.2 offers significant performance, configuration, and control enhancements to the open-source Web server. Evaluate version enhancements to determine if existing Apache installations demand the upgrade. New Web servers in Apache shops should use Apache 2.2.

Apache 2.2 Improvements

Since 1996, Apache has dominated the Web server space. Though not as popular with larger businesses, Apache's Fortune 1000 market share is rising and reached 23% in July 2006 (see "Port80 Surveys the Top 1000 Corporations' Web Servers," from Port80). Improvements offered by Apache 2.2 promise to further improve this market share.
