Symantec recently announced its new initiative, Security 2.0, which targets consumers and the enterprises. At the enterprise, Security 2.0 is about protecting information rather than the platforms. Although all the tools needed to implement Security 2.0 are not yet in place, the functionality offered holds significant promise.
Security 1.0
In labeling the next security frontier as Security 2.0, Symantec has also given us the term Security 1.0 – traditional system or platform security. Tools such as firewalls, IDP, and anti-malware fall into this category. Symantec also argues that platform security has been done; tools are in place, and capabilities have been addressed. This is not to say that platform security is dead, simply that all the revolutionary developments have been made and what remains is evolutionary advancement. Additionally, Info-Tech agrees that the next vanguard for platform security is likely the consolidation and integration of existing tools.
